Topo Ranch began as a working cattle ranch in Monterey County in central California. The land was purchased in 1860 by Patrick Breen, a survivor of the Donner Party disaster in the snowbound Sierra Nevada in 1846. Through several generations the ranch supported the family with its cattle- and sheep-raising businesses. Several Hollywood westerns used the ranch grounds for location shooting during the 1920s.
A favorite story of the Breen family concerns a horse named El Capitan that lived in the first quarter of the 20th century. This horse was known for his perfect training and his ability to perform at a rodeo without a bridle bit in his mouth. He and his rider relied only on a rope around his neck to transmit commands. Legend has it that El Capitan's owner, James Edwin Breen, accepted a dare during the Salinas Rodeo and rode the horse into the lobby of the Abbott House Hotel.
