Money Matters: What to Buy in August
By: Christian Gordun
August is a month of transition, somewhere between summer and fall, when we're still holding onto those warm sunny days but gearing up for the new opportunities and experiences on the horizon. It's also a great time to find deals on a variety of products, with back to school sales in full swing and retailers discounting outdoor living items to make room for cooler weather inventory. Here's a cheat sheet to help you best allocate your funds this month.
Back to School
In early August, retailers start advertising their back to school sales to encourage customers into stores and onto websites, which means the savvy consumer can find great deals on items to get the family ready to start a new year. At Staples, you'll find weekly deals on classroom necessities like paper folders, writing utensils and art supplies. On the Office Depot site, teachers can even create and share classroom supplies check lists with parents to ensure each student comes to the first day of school with the tools they need to learn.
Kids Clothing
Because you want you little ones dressed to impress their classmates, now is the time to take advantage of the great deals retailers are offering on kids clothing and school uniforms. Old Navy is having a huge back to school sale on uniforms for children of all ages, and at Target it's buy one, get one 50% off kids' shoes, plus deals on clothing, backpacks and more.
Computers
If you're looking for a MacBook for your matriculating college freshman, a multipurpose PC for home computing or an uber-portable notebook, August is an excellent time of year to buy. At Dell.com, laptops start at prices as low as $299.99. Walmart.com makes shopping for laptops easy, offering value bundles, special buys and refurbished computers for even less. To make the deal even sweeter, they offer free shipping on all laptop purchases.
Dorm Deals
It's almost time to load up the station wagon and say goodbye to dear old Mom and Dad, and if you're in need of twin XL sheets, JCPenny has campus essentials for under $100. Shop their entire college living department, which has everything you'll need to get an A in dormitory style points. Outfit your new digs with chic bedding, accessories and decor at affordable prices. Another place we love for doodads to deck out your study pad is Target, with accessories for kitchen, bedroom and bath under $30.
Grills
The seasoned pit master knows there is plenty of grilling left to be done this summer, and if you're in the market for a new grill to kick your outdoor entertaining into high gear, head to Kmart, now offering up to 20% off grills with free store pickup. They have a huge selection of gas, charcoal and electric grills, along with smokers and specialty cookers.
Patio Furniture
During late summer, many home supply stores and furniture retailers put their patio collections on sale to make room for fall inventory, which makes this a terrific time to invest in a dining set, a loveseat or lighting to brighten up your outdoor living space. Lowe's home improvement store is currently offering discounted prices on brand name sofas, coffee tables, dining tables and chair cushions.
